World-Renowned Speaker Almon Gunter Inspires USF Students with Powerful Message on Leadership and Mental Toughness
TAMPA, Fla. — Students at the University of South Florida’s Zimmerman School of Advertising & Mass Communications received a motivational boost this week from Almon Gunter, an internationally recognized keynote speaker, author, and former Nike-sponsored track athlete.
Driving four hours from Jacksonville to Tampa, Gunter visited a Media Planning for Advertising class taught by Ronda C. Clement, MBA, CCMP, bringing his signature energy, wisdom, and storytelling.
Joining him were his business partner, John Michael Castillo, and Ashlyn Kane, a former Division I soccer player at Mississippi State University.
Gunter’s speech centered on leadership, mental toughness, and the power of “being the one” — a mindset grounded in self-belief and personal responsibility. His message to students was direct:
“You’ve got to believe that you are enough — and act like it,” Gunter said.
The conversation blended motivational insight with practical lessons, encouraging students not only to succeed academically but also to develop the resilience and self-awareness required to thrive in life and career.
For Clement, the visit marked a highlight of the semester:
“It was real, raw, and exactly what my students needed to hear, and when guest speakers travel from out of town to speak to your class, you know you have great students,” Clement said.
Reflecting on the experience, Gunter emphasized his commitment to mentoring the next generation.
“Serving others is where real leadership begins, and I believe in pouring into young people. USF has some outstanding future leaders in the making,” Gunter said.
Students echoed the impact. Christian Jensen, one of the attendees, said the former Nike athlete left a lasting impression:
“Hearing Almon speak made me realize leadership isn’t about a title and that it’s about believing in yourself and showing up every day. It was exactly the motivation I needed” Christian said.
